Raytheon - Integrated Skills Deveopment

Transforming Legacy Docs

At Raytheon's Integrated Skills Development group, I am transforming legacy documentation into a scalable docs-as-code pipeline. I've developed custom Python tooling to migrate Word documentation to Markdown and generate a static HTML documentation site published on GitHub Pages.

 

Focusing on the User

A key focus of my work has been stepping through the skill development applications to create documentation content while also testing usability. With the end user always in mind, I work closely with UI/UX and development teams to identify and address bugs and usability improvements.

 

Improving AI Agent Responses

I introduced a formal testing program to evaluate AI chatbot responses using ratings and detailed record keeping. Using the test data, I regularly restructure and iterate content for AI ingestion to improve response accuracy and the user experience with the AI agent.

Facilitating Collaboration

I drew on my experience at Oracle to help implement JIRA and Figma workflows across the broader team, driving deeper collaboration between technical documentation, software development, and UI/UX.

Principal User Assistance Developer
(Technical Writer & Illustrator)

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Developed and maintained customer-facing documentation for cloud services (including user guides, API documentation, troubleshooting, and release notes). Configured Oracle Linux cloud compute instances to create preview environments to conduct hands-on testing to validate UI, API, and CLI. Collaborated directly with SMEs (developers, product management, and support teams) to create and refine content.

  • Experienced in docs-as-code workflows. Worked daily with Git (Bitbucket & GitLab) using both the command line and Oxygen plugin. Used a shared repository to collaborate with other writers. Published content using in-house

  • Wrote Python script to automate Oracle Linux image release notes generation reducing a task that took 5 hours to 15 minutes.

  • Improved AI chatbot accuracy by 25% by optimizing documentation for AI consumption through response testing and content iteration.

  • Edited and enhanced Swagger/OpenAPI specifications. Worked with developers to add SDK examples. Reviewed 1200+ description statements to improve the API reference guide.

  • Used AI assist tools to review and develop new content, summarize SME demos, and analyze code for API documentation.

  • Onboarded and mentored new writers on the OCI toolset, Git workflows, and publication processes. Maintained internal Confluence procedures for publication processes and best practices for the DITA open toolkit, content reuse, tasked-based authoring, and template usage.

Linux and Virtualization Training Group

Created how-to videos using Camtasia and Snagit. Experimented with Oracle Linux compute instances and learned Linux concepts to develop course material. Produced the videos end-to-end by capturing screens, recording audio, creating visual aids, and editing.

  • Developed Introduction to Oracle Linux YouTube course.

  • Directed process improvements for video production. Created templates and wrote guidance on best practices for audio and video capture.

StorageTek Tape Storage

Develop and maintain customer-facing documentation (user’s guides, installation guides, release notes, online help, etc.) for both hardware and software tape storage products, including APIs and web-based GUIs. Create technical illustrations using Photoshop/Illustrator and digital photography for the entire writing team.

  • Worked with subject matter experts to develop content and verify technical accuracy of documentation.

  • Developed how-to videos for product software. Experience with video screen capture software and creating detailed product diagrams by photographing hardware products.

  • Reworked pre-existing content to reduce word count by 50% and significantly reduce translation cost – effective at creating clear and concise topic-based content using principles of minimalism.

  • Converted documentation from unstructured to structured XML, developed new templates, and updated HTML style using CSS.

  • Converted documentation from structured FrameMaker to Oxygen DITA.

Apogee Scientific

Performed mercury emissions testing at coal-fired power plants and operated packed-bed mercury laboratory. Completed site visits to evaluate future test sites, develop test plans, order equipment, conduct instrument setup and maintenance, manage subcontracted test crews, and coordinate with clients to meet test specifications.

  • Wrote final technical reports for full-scale mercury testing and laboratory testing.

  • Rewrote outdated user’s guide for in-house mercury monitor, creating detailed diagrams and flow charts of equipment.

  • Designed sales pamphlet to showcase capabilities of FTIR testing equipment.
